Antelope

There are several problems with taking pictures at Antelope Canyon. One is that because this is one of the most photographed locations in the world, it's very hard to take "original" images. It's like trying to achieve originality in shots of the Taj Mahal. Another is that in the confined space of a slot canyon, the crowds of visitors inevitably get in the way, and none is more obstructive and annoying than the "serious" photographers with their bulky equipment, ostentiously trying to set up tripods where's barely room for human legs. The third problem is the technical difficulty posed by the extreme contrasts of light and shadow, both of which tend to eliminate detail. I tried to deal with these problems by not dealing with them: using a hand-held camera and only two lenses (a wide-angle and a 50 mm prime), composing and shooting very quickly, accepting the streaks and smudges induced by fast hands and slow shutter speeds, working with the wash-outs and black-outs, and using the tourists as props.
